A woman dressed as the Easter Bunny unexpectedly became a source of comfort during a chaotic Easter weekend shooting in Bakersfield.

Gunfire erupted Sunday afternoon in a residential neighborhood, sending victims scrambling for safety — including one injured person who ran toward a group of bystanders that included someone wearing the holiday costume, KBAK-TV reported.

Officers responded around 4:48 p.m. April 4 to reports of a shooting in the 4700 block of Half Dome Way, where they found an ongoing dispute between residents and two people — a man and a boy — who had arrived in a vehicle according to the Bakersfield Police Department, as reported by KBAK.

Police said both the man and the boy had minor injuries and were armed with loaded firearms. Additional victims were also located at the scene and transported to the hospital, KBAK reported.

Once medically cleared, the suspects are expected to be booked into Kern County Juvenile Hall and the Kern County Jail on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and other firearms-related offenses, according to the station.

Surveillance video captured the sound of multiple gunshots as people rushed to help those injured, including a person wearing an Easter Bunny costume, KBAK said in their report.

The individual inside the costume told Eyewitness News that one victim approached them for help in the aftermath of the shooting.

“He’s like, ‘I just ran to you cause I felt like you were the safest, you’re the Easter Bunny,'” Sara, the person wearing the costume, told the outlet.

Sara said she helped apply pressure to the victim’s wound and ptobided water while waiting for emergency responders to arrive, according to KBAK.
