Georgia dentist declared ‘threat to public safety’ after patient left with necrosis

A high-flying dentist in Georgia had his license yanked and was deemed a “threat to public safety” after a flurry of complaints — including from one patient who alleges she could lose her front teeth due to a botched procedure that left her with rotting roots.

Dr. Justin Scott was forced to shut his Scott’s Pure Dental Health practice in Atlanta after he was slapped with an emergency license suspension by the Georgia Board of Dentistry last month, records show.

Officials say they had received a handful of complaints from patients about alleged poor treatment at Scott’s practice and even reports of unlicensed employees providing care, according to a summary of the suspension order.

One patient alleged she was now at risk of losing her front teeth after her treatment plan at Scott’s practice left her with “significant root resorption.”

Another patient who underwent a tooth implant that ultimately failed later discovered they had bone necrosis — a serious condition where cells in the jawbone can die due to infection, the filing states.

And a third patient alleged follow-up appointments at another dental office “identified multiple conditions that required correction as a result of poor orthodontic treatment.”

Separately, the board also said Scott allowed unlicensed individuals to perform treatment on his patients and accused him of engaging in “deceitful and/or misleading billing and treatment planning.”

An inspection of Scott’s offices last September following the complaints uncovered “extensive and pervasive failures of sanitary practice” — including unsealed instruments stashed in drawers and expired supplies, according to the order.

Ultimately, the board ruled that Scott’s continued use of his dental license “poses a threat to the public health, safety and welfare.”

It wasn’t immediately clear when Scott shut down the practice.

Scott, meanwhile, appeared to be vacationing in Puerto Rico, according to his social media.

Neither Scott or the practice have commented on the order.
